Vessel Examiner Course

The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program actively promotes boating safety by using trained Auxiliary volunteers to educate the boater through a direct, face-to-face boating safety information exchange with the owner or operator and providing instructions on equipment to be carried on board and other matters affecting safety. Federal and local equipment regulations and VSC requirements are explained as well as other matters of interest.

For qualification as a Vessel Examiner (VE), the member must pass the current VE Qualification Examination and satisfactorily conduct a minimum of five Vessel Safety Checks facility inspections under the supervision of a currently qualified VE.

You can achieve the status of a Vessel Examiner by passing an open book, three hour time limit examination with a score of 90% or better. A VE may annually retain qualification by fulfilling the following requirements:

  • Performing at least five passing or failing VSCs or passing facility inspections each calendar year.
  • Attending, when required, one approved VE/MV workshop each calendar year.
