You may be interested in joining us in the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary which is the civilian component of the U. S. Coast Guard. The Auxiliary has 37,000 members throughout the United States. It offers you an opportunity to serve with the Coast Guard, striving to keep public boating activities safe. You may also participate on patrol boats as crew and/or serve as a radio watchstander on safety patrols and search-and-rescue missions.

You can enroll in courses covering almost every aspect of seamanship, and--if you are willing to undergo further training--qualify to help teach boating safety classes, carry out safety inspections of recreational boats, serve as crew (or even commander) of on-water safety patrols, or help with a number of administrative tasks, both within the Auxiliary and with the Coast Guard itself. Many of our members do not own boats and satisfy their boating appetites by serving as "Crew" on our facilities.

If you live in the Englewood area, or keep your boat at a nearby marina, we would like to get acquainted with you. Our Flotilla meets at 7 PM on the second Tuesday of most months. Occasionally we alter the meeting schedule so check before you come down. The meetings are at 1949 Englewood Rd., Englewood, FL 34223. If you are thinking of joining the Auxiliary, come and visit us at a meeting to see what we do. Prospective members are required to complete the Auxiliary New Member Course and pass the open book exam. New members are assigned a mentor who provides advice and counsel until the person has become familiar with the people and policies of the flotilla.

Membership is open to citizens of the United States and its territories and possessions, who are 17 years of age or older, and have not been convicted of a felony. Facility (radio station, boat, or aircraft) ownership is desirable but not mandatory. Individuals with special training or experience in any Auxiliary program are encouraged to join. Membership is also open to all active duty or former members of any of the uniformed services and their reserve components.
